Climate change is detrimental to human health and has disproportionate effects on vulnerable populations. The Red River Métis rely on the land for hunting, fishing, trapping, and gathering. Impacts of environmental changes can be observed on-the-land through the disruption of hunting and game migration patterns, changes in fish populations, melting of permafrost, lower crop yields, and the loss of traditional foods and medicine, all of which impact food security. Our event hopes to inspire climate action by showcasing the work underway the Red River Métis to help tackle environmental changes to the land that have impacted Red River Métis identity, livelihoods, and traditional ways of life. We aim to inspire other Nations to be inclusive, showing that Indigenous Knowledge is a key factor in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
