Launch of GAIA Blended Finance Platform

Join the official launch event for GAIA, where opening remarks will be given by each of the platform’s partners, MUFG Bank, FinDev Canada, Green Climate Fund, Climate Fund Manager and USAID. A reception will follow that will provide an opportunity for partners and peers to connect and interact. GAIA is a $ 1.5 billion blended finance platform which enables the deployment of long-term loans into climate investments in emerging markets and developing economies. It brings together commercial, concessional, and philanthropic capital. GAIA is committed to overcoming barriers that hinder private investment in climate change projects in emerging markets and pave the way for the creation of similar platforms which could lead to substantial private sector investments in various sectors.

Delivering Loss and Damage Financing to the Most Vulnerable in the Global South

This event will feature the latest research and insights from two of Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC) funded collaborative local action research projects. The event seeks to shift the understanding of L&D policy actors and other stakeholders towards a more country-driven, locally led, context specific, and inclusive delivery of L&D financing. The event aims to stimulate evidence-informed and critical discussions on how L&D financing can be more effective and inclusive; create a platform for members and advocates of vulnerable countries to articulate their concerns and voice on L&D; inform COP29 delegates to advance L&D related negotiations with greater sense of urgency, conceptual clarity, and justice; and promote specific policy research and capacity building agenda from the point of view of just climate financing focusing on L&D and resilience building.

Advancing Portfolio Decarbonization: The Road to Net Zero

This event will explore the critical role of portfolio decarbonization in achieving global climate goals and driving the transition to net zero. Attendees will learn about strategies for investors in decarbonizing their portfolios. Key themes include the application of transition finance frameworks and taxonomies to guide decarbonization. The discussion will emphasize practical steps and collaboration to accelerate global sustainability efforts.

Leveraging Carbon Pricing for Climate Finance in the Americas

Carbon pricing mechanisms and the revenues they generate are public policy tools that can help bridge the climate financing gap faced by many governments. The Carbon Pricing in the Americas (CPA) forum brings together national and sub-national governments from across the Americas, many of whom have implemented such mechanisms to speed up the energy and climate transition of their population and economy. Come and hear about their experiences and successes, learn about the approaches they have chosen to invest their proceeds, find out about their best practices, and discover their plans for the future.

Resilient Futures: Preparing the Most Vulnerable for Climate Mobility

Governments worldwide have called for better data on the linkages between climate change and human mobility to improve policymaking, financing, and action. This panel highlights two projects aimed at strengthening the evidence base on climate mobility in Eastern and Southern Africa (UNICEF) and Southern Mexico (IOM). By exploring adaptive strategies for different populations—whether displaced children or rural farmers—we are addressing immediate needs while preparing for the green transition and advancing the SDGs. The panel will show how targeted, evidence-based interventions can help avert, minimize, and address displacement, while building resilience and sustainable development in the face of climate change.

Alberta’s Industrial Carbon Pricing Leadership

Alberta’s Industrial Carbon Pricing Leadership – Achieving Emission Reductions While Enabling Economic Growth – Technology Innovation and Emissions Reduction Regulation (TIER). This panel will focus on Alberta’s leadership in designing, developing, and implementing its industrial carbon pricing system and associated emission trading (offset) system. Key themes include the balance between emission reductions and economic growth, with specific examples from the oil and gas sector, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS) technology uptake, and coal phase-out.

CFAN Post-NCQG: Scaling Climate Finance for Resilience and Opportunity in SIDS and LDCs

With the support of Canada, the US, and Australia, CFAN and its regional partners are advancing tailored solutions that unlock access to climate funds and leverage private investments. CFAN locally recruits, trains, and embeds finance advisors in governments or DAEs, dedicated to developing high quality priority projects while building lasting in-country capacity. With a global project pipeline representing USD $1.3 billion, there are currently 20 CFAN advisors active in the Pacific and Caribbean: this event will announce the expansion of the Network to Africa. As negotiations on the NCQG enter their last stages, speakers from Canada, the US, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and CFAN advisors from the Caribbean and Pacific will share their perspectives on how to effectively roll out new commitments, and how CFAN can evolve in its crucial role as a key delivery mechanism of international climate finance.
