Network of Boundary Organizations on Adaptation Showcase and Networking Event
The International Network of Boundary Organizations on Adaptation (INBOA), established during Adaptation Futures 2023, will host its first annual showcase highlighting member’s successful boundary work, i.e. at the interface of research and decision-making. The Québec Minister of Environment and Ouranos will highlight tools developed to support municipalities with their adaptation measures. Regions4 will offer an international perspective on how global networks can support adaptation action locally, notably through their RegionsAdapt initiative. Finally, the Climate and Resilience Research with the Chilean Ministry of Environment will showcase their collaboration on data governance platforms for assessing climate risks and adaptation solutions. As boundary organizations are key actors in accelerating adaptation, INBOA seeks to create a space for knowledge sharing and relationship building that will enhance individual and collective contribution to global adaptation.

Report Launch: “Battery Storage Unlocked: Lessons Learned from Emerging Economies”
The Clean Energy Ministerial Supercharging Battery Storage Initiative serves as a vehicle to accelerate battery storage deployment around the world, supporting the integration of renewables while securing the stability and reliability of the electricity grid. This is the launch event for the Initiative’s first policy report, “Battery Storage Unlocked: Lessons Learned from Emerging Economies”, which features lessons learned and best practices for accelerating battery storage globally, with case studies from Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and the Pacific. The report spotlights the multifaceted benefits that battery storage solutions can provide to power grids of emerging economies, the key market, policy, and regulatory factors that make up the enabling environment, and the roles of technical assistance and finance.
Accelerating the Energy Transition in North America: What Role for Subnational States?
Building on the unprecedented breakthrough in favour of a fossil fuel phase-out achieved at COP28, this event will bring together representatives of sub-national governments, Canadian civil society, and international organizations to discuss the way forward when it comes to accelerating the energy transition in Canada and the United States. Moderated in both official languages, this multi-sectoral panel will highlight the leadership of certain sub-national states, including Quebec – which currently co-chairs the Beyond Oil and Gas Alliance (BOGA) – in phasing out fossil fuel exploration and production on their territory, but also the challenges they face, with a view to catalyzing action by other jurisdictions. Drawing on a recent analysis by the International Institute on Sustainable Development, the discussion will also address the key role of civil society in the transition away from oil and gas.
This hour-long panel will be followed by networking.
Securing A Reliable Energy Future While Rapidly Decarbonizing Existing Infrastructure
Securing a reliable and affordable energy future while rapidly decarbonizing existing infrastructure is paramount. This panel explores how Canada and its international allies leverage innovative technologies and strategic funding to transform the natural gas sector. This session is a practical guide to Canadian leadership in climate action and energy innovation. The panel will present key case studies illustrating how NGIF’s funding has accelerated the commercialization of breakthrough technologies; discuss how NGIF, Emissions Reduction Alberta, and Alberta Innovates collaborate to de-risk and scale these technologies; and provide practical examples from GHGSat, which is revolutionizing emissions monitoring, and Tourmaline. which can showcase the smart energy management system, projected to reduce 11.3 million tonnes of CO2 by 2050.
Launch of the CEM Campaign – Empowering Regulators to Tackle Decarbonisation
Governments worldwide have set ambitious decarbonisation targets and begun moving on the road towards net zero. While energy policies are designed with a broad group of stakeholders, including civil society, businesses, and finance institutions, energy regulators are often overlooked, yet, they play a crucial role. This high-level event will be the launch of a new Clean Energy Ministerial Campaign lead by Australia and is seeking to kickstart a long-standing dialogue between governments and regulators to support the energy transition and identify the best strategies for collaboration. Within the setting of COP 29 this event will provide a unique opportunity to link high-level energy transition objectives with clear priorities for implementation, shaping the workplan prepared by RAP, 21CPP and the Regulatory Energy Transition Accelerator.
Leaving No One Behind: Renewable Energy Solutions for Remote and Underserved Communities
Join NRCan and IRENA as they prepare for the second phase of the ‘Global Initiative for Transitioning Remote Communities to Renewable Energy’ with a heightened focus on countries and communities. The event will explore innovative financing tools and business/delivery models to support the transition of remote communities to renewable energy. It will delve into the latest renewable energy technologies and strategies for decentralised solutions. Additionally, the session will highlight the importance of incorporating diverse perspectives and leadership, ensuring that the unique needs and contributions of various communities are integrated into the broader conversation on sustainable energy transitions.
Collaboration on Climate – Lessons from the Grease Trail
Implementing climate solutions that have domestic & international implications. FNCI helped establish the First Nations led organization K’uul Power which is advancing co-ownership and expedited development of renewable energy transmission & generation infrastructure to support decarbonization of the western Canadian economy and establishment of a Green Shipping Corridor from Canada across the Pacific to Asia & the Middle East. FNCI & partners are pursuing decarbonization pathways in Asia for western Canadian LNG, Hydrogen, and hydrogen derived fuels like ammonia. This project is engaging Canadian suppliers with Asian customers in development of potential trading opportunities. Halfway River First Nation’s implementation of Indigenous Nature-Based Solutions is recovering ecosystems in First Nations Territories to support culturally important values and to protect and restore globally significant carbon sinks.
Solutions Dialogue: Scaling Energy Transition Solutions in Emerging Markets
In 2024, the Powering Past Coal Alliance, co-chaired by Canada and the UK, is hosting a series of Solutions Dialogues to share lessons learned, key findings, and innovative solutions from early movers transitioning away from coal power. The series began in London with a High-Level Dialogue, followed by regional events in Santiago, Jakarta, New York, and Singapore. These dialogues provide a platform for governments, industry, financial institutions, and civil society to share practical solutions for addressing the challenges of early retirement, just transition, and energy security. The COP29 Solutions Dialogue will conclude the series, spotlighting Latin America and Asia-Pacific. It will highlight the support available from governments, technical partners, and financial mechanisms to help emerging economies develop plans and take the necessary steps toward a coal phase-out aligned with the 1.5°C target.
The Youth Outlook on More Inclusive and Just Energy Transitions
This event will focus on highlighting youths’ perspectives and inputs in moulding inclusive, transparent, and equitable energy transitions. The main aim is to guarantee that young individuals are not just simply involved in procedures but are also given the authority to lead in this energy transition process in areas where access to quality education and training is lacking. We will discuss the significance of equity and intergenerational dialogues and how youth-led solutions are currently tackling key obstacles in the shift to cleaner energy sources. Not only that, but we will share innovative youth-informed policy recommendations to tackle the distinct obstacles youths worldwide encounter.
